Eight Lasers on their way to Sri Lanka

Following a request from the Yachting Association of Sri Lanka to source 8 Laser Radials of mid-range value to help establish a coaching programme in Sri Lanka, 2ndhanddinghies have spent the last 5 months scouring UK sailing clubs for suitable boats. Using their contacts, expertise, workshop facilities and organisational abilities, they procured 8 good value Lasers. 2ndhanddinghies were then able to undertake the loading of these boats into a 20ft container at their Emsworth base. This involved building a wooden frame in the container to be able to stack the boats in 2 columns of 4 boats. It was tight but we did manage to close the door! The container left for Colombo, Sri Lanka on Dec 22nd; with a shipping time of 32 days the boats could well be sailing in very warm waters by early February.

If you need help with sourcing of dinghies to meet your requirements – with or without onward transportation – then please do contact us.

Pete coaches at the Endeavour Trophy Championship

The Endeavour is an Invitation-Only event organised by the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club at Burnham-on-Crouch; the entrants are hand-picked from National Champions of specific recognised fleets. Hence the winner of the Endeavour Trophy is referred to as the ‘Champion of Champions’. The racing is held in boats all of the same class so that everyone competes on an equal footing at least as far as the boats are concerned.

For the first time in its 55 year history the boat for this year’s Endeavour was the RS200.

Eight races are held over a weekend with the previous Friday dedicated to practice with coaching made available for participants.

With his all-round knowledge of the RS200 as a leading competitor, dealer for the class, boat repairer and very experienced coach in the class Pete was invited to provide the coaching and support for competitors. He helped with rigging the boats, sailing techniques specifc to the RS200 and was on hand all day to support the sailors and their crew so that they were confidently able to approach the weekend of racing.

The racing conditions were ideal with a high proportion of boats finishing every race. Ben Saxton and Toby Lewis were fairly predictably the winners. However their achievement of eight 1st places was a unique result in the 55 year history of the Endeavour.

Pete puts their acheivment down to his outstanding coaching – but they may just be outstanding RS200 sailors!
